Dear friends,
I had the pleasure to meet with politicians and buraucrats in Brussels last week. With me I had +25 SMEs in the ICT sector from around Europe.
It is obvious to me that our elected officials as well as the mandarins of Brussels want to meet with us and discuss the future of the ICT sector. The do not see enough of SMEs so they welcome us with open arms!
My dream is that Europe should one day became the equivalent to Silicon Valley but that is a very distant goal.
More reachable is to give SMEs a foundation in Europe for great software development and that starts with being able to chose a business model without interference.
What I mean is that a strong domestic market is the best platform for any company and right now there are thoughts that the Public sector should favor Open Source. There are many SMEs in the ICT sector that do not see giving away their software for free as a sustainable business model!
With freedom for the Public sector to not favor one or the other we will all be equal and companies can develop commercial software, with IP that is protected, and sell to everyone that wants to buy.
Then the ones that are successful will be able to build strength in their European domestic market and then reach out to other parts of the world. That will create high quality jobs, and more taxes will be paid, and that will take us closer to the vision of 'Silicon Valley of Europe'!
Regards, Per
