It looks like the consolidation in the industry continues. Sun has been a very innovative company since its birth and it amazing that they have been so successful on its own for so many years.
I congratulate IBM if they can pull this one all the way. It is a great acquisition!
But is it great for the industry? Is it grea for customers?
This I doubt very much because Sun has added richness to the industry and their culture is so very different to compared to IBM's. Sun is sprung out of Silicon Valley and they are very different to IBM's more formal culture.
I also think that customers and other players will miss an independent Sun and it is likely that the greater talents will depart for startup in the Valley and other major players such as Micrsoft. Mr Ballmer and Mr Turner - let's recruit in the Valley this year!
Warm regards, Per
