What technology should you bet on in your data centre? What technology should you encourage your customers to chose?
In the field of 'micro computers' the dominant player have been VMware. Hardware vendors as well as SIs, VARs and hosters have had no other choice than VMware so it have been easy to decide on strategy.
Since this Summer Microsoft is now a very serious player in this field and now there is actually a choice between two competing technologies from two competing vendors. Yes, it is true that VMware have some functionality that is not available yet from Microsoft (such as live migration) but basically we have two players on the field that both have great offerings.
I believe that this choice is not for technicians to make - instead it is for the CIO and perhaps the CFO in a customer organization - and for top management in an SI, VAR or hoster.
The reason is simply because it is of strategic nature.
I am betting in my own business on Microsoft Hyper-V because it is less costly to implement but much more important it is much less costly to operate. The people that run Windows Servers can also run the virtualized environment with only some extra training. That translates in to more people being able to operate and they need less specialization.
I also love Microsoft's approach to 'democratize' Virtualization by making it a feature of Windows Server 2008 and taking away the 'white coat' attitude!
The choice is yours and you should make the choice that you think works best for you.
